My wife and I have been visiting many different churches. We are not looking for one to call our home (we already attend an awesome church), but we are learning what others believe, how they worship, what they teach, etc. Many religions call themselves Christians, but not all of them believe like Protestant Christians.
As we visited the Mormon church, they sang several songs from their hymn book. Here are a few hymns that are in their hymn book and a brief response to their messages. Unfortunately, the false doctrines in the Mormon religion are taught in their worship.
Hymn #27 - "Praise to the Man"
This hymn was written about Joseph Smith. Here are some excerpts: "Praise to the man that communed with Jehovah.....Jesus anointed that Prophet and Seer.....great is his glory and endless is his priesthood.....ever and ever the keys he will hold.....earth must atone for the blood of that man.....millions shall know 'Brother Joseph' again."
As you can see, there are several problems with this song. Christians refrain from singing about Paul, Peter and the "Christian greats." Why would we sing praises about a created, human being?
It is obvious that the Mormon church tries to establish Joseph Smith's credibility through worshiping Him. If they can get their congregation to sing about him being a prophet and chosen man of God, they can get them to believe and keep believing that he was who he claimed to be.
Hymn #236 - "Lord, Accept into Thy Kingdom"
The Mormon church believes in baptism for the dead. This practice is never condoned in the Bible (1 Corinthians 15). Nonetheless, they have a song that includes a reference to doing this.
"Lord, accept into thy kingdom, each repentant and humbled one, born of water and the Spirit, in the Beloved Son.....like the sound of rushing waters, in this day his word is said: Holy ordinance of mercy, for the living and the dead!"
Hymn #25 - "Now We'll Sing with One Accord"
Since the Mormons like to spread their views in their music, it would only make sense for them to authenticate the Book of Mormon. This hymn has their attendees boldly singing about their "perfect" book and founder (Smith).
"And the Book of Mormon true, with it's cov'nant ever new, for the Gentile and the Jew.....Even Joseph he inspired; yea, his heart he truly fired, with the light he desired, for the work of righteousness."
Hymn #26 - "Joseph Smith's First Prayer"
Although the Bible says that nobody has ever seen God (1 John 4:12), Mormons think Joseph Smith did.
"Joseph, this is my Beloved; Hear Him! Oh, how sweet the word! Joseph's humble prayer was answered, and he listened to the Lord. Oh, what rapture filled his bosom, for he saw the living God; Oh, what rapture filled his bosom, for he saw the living God."
Hymn #300 - Families Can Be Together Forever"
This song hinges on the Mormon belief that families and marriages are eternal. The Bible does not allude or even hint at this. We'll see our loved ones that our saved, but to have binding, familial relationships in Heaven is not biblical. Of course, Mormons believe you have to be married in their temple to be married for eternity.
"Fam'lies can be together forever, through Heave'nly Father's plan.....While I am in my early years, I'll prepare most carefully, so I can marry in God's temple for eternity....."
Hymn #288 - How Beautiful Thy Temples, Lord
Is salvation possible for those who are dead? The Bible says, "And it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment." (Hebrews 9:27) Nonetheless, Mormons sing about saving the dead.
"How beautiful thy message Lord, the gospel pure and true, in these our days to earth restored, and taught to men anew. How beautiful its faith and hope; all mankind it would save, including in its aim and scope, the souls beyond the grave."
Hymn #328 - An Angel from on High
The Mormon faith believes that an angel of God named Moroni told Joseph Smith where the gold plates, with the Book of Mormon written on them, were buried. They sing about it, too.
"Sealed by Moroni's hand, it has for ages lain to wait the Lord's command, from dust to speak again."
