Chapter 2

I will stand⁴ upon my watch, and set¹⁰¹ me upon the tower, and will watch¹⁷ to see² what he will say¹⁷ unto me, and what I shall answer⁵⁵ when I am reproved.

And the LORD answered⁴ me, and said,⁴ Write³ the vision, and make [it] plain¹⁶ upon tables, that he may run⁴ that readeth⁶ it.

For the vision [is] yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak,⁵⁵ and not lie:¹⁷ though it tarry,¹¹⁸ wait¹⁶ for it; because it will surely² come,⁴ it will not tarry.¹⁷

Behold, his soul [which] is lifted up²⁷ is not upright¹ in him: but the just shall live⁴ by his faith.

Yea also, because he transgresseth⁶ by wine, [he is] a proud man, neither keepeth at home,⁴ who enlargeth⁵² his desire as hell, and [is] as death, and cannot be satisfied,⁴ but gathereth⁴ unto him all nations, and heapeth⁴ unto him all people:

Shall not all these take up⁴ a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say,⁴ Woe to him that increaseth⁵⁶ [that which is] not his! how long? and to him that ladeth⁵⁶ himself with thick clay!

Shall they not rise up⁴ suddenly that shall bite⁶ thee, and awake⁴ that shall vex⁴⁷ thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?

Because thou hast spoiled¹ many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil⁴ thee; because of men's blood, and [for] the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell⁶ therein.

Woe to him that coveteth⁶ an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set² his nest on high, that he may be delivered⁹ from the power of evil!

Thou hast consulted¹ shame to thy house by cutting off² many people, and hast sinned⁶ [against] thy soul.

For the stone shall cry out⁴ of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer⁴ it.

Woe to him that buildeth⁶ a town with blood, and stablisheth³¹ a city by iniquity!

Behold, [is it] not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour⁴ in the very fire, and the people shall weary⁴ themselves for very vanity?

For the earth shall be filled¹¹ with the knowledge² of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover¹⁷ the sea.

Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink,⁵⁶ that puttest¹⁸ thy bottle to [him], and makest [him] drunken¹⁵ also, that thou mayest look⁵³ on their nakedness!

Thou art filled¹ with shame for glory: drink³ thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered:¹⁰ the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned¹¹ unto thee, and shameful spewing [shall be] on thy glory.

For the violence of Lebanon shall cover¹⁷ thee, and the spoil of beasts, [which] made them afraid,⁵⁵ because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell⁶ therein.

What profiteth⁵² the graven image that the maker⁶ thereof hath graven¹ it; the molten image, and a teacher⁵⁶ of lies, that the maker⁶ of his work trusteth¹ therein, to make² dumb idols?

Woe unto him that saith⁶ to the wood, Awake;⁵⁴ to the dumb stone, Arise,³ it shall teach!⁵⁵ Behold, it [is] laid over⁷ with gold and silver, and [there is] no breath at all in the midst of it.

But the LORD [is] in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence¹⁶ before him.
