Chapter 8

[Set] the trumpet to thy mouth. [He shall come] as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed¹ my covenant, and trespassed¹ against my law.

Israel shall cry⁴ unto me, My God, we know¹ thee.

Israel hath cast off¹ [the thing that is] good: the enemy⁶ shall pursue⁴ him.

They have set up kings,⁵² but not by me: they have made princes,⁵² and I knew¹ [it] not: of their silver and their gold have they made¹ them idols, that they may be cut off.¹¹

Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast [thee] off;¹ mine anger is kindled¹ against them: how long [will it be] ere they attain⁴ to innocency?

For from Israel [was] it also: the workman made¹ it; therefore it [is] not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

For they have sown⁴ the wind, and they shall reap⁴ the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield⁴ no meal: if so be it yield,⁴ the strangers⁵ shall swallow it up.⁴

Israel is swallowed up:⁸ now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein [is] no pleasure.

For they are gone up¹ to Assyria, a wild ass alone⁶ by himself: Ephraim hath hired⁵² lovers.

Yea, though they have hired⁴ among the nations, now will I gather¹⁷ them, and they shall sorrow⁵⁵ a little for the burden of the king of princes.

Because Ephraim hath made many⁵² altars to sin,² altars shall be unto him to sin.²

I have written⁴ to him the great things ⁷²³⁹ of my law, [but] they were counted⁸ as a strange thing.⁵

They sacrifice⁴ flesh [for] the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat⁴ [it; but] the LORD accepteth¹ them not; now will he remember⁴ their iniquity, and visit⁴ their sins: they shall return⁴ to Egypt.

For Israel hath forgotten⁴ his Maker,⁶ and buildeth⁴ temples; and Judah hath multiplied⁵² fenced⁷ cities: but I will send¹⁴ a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour¹ the palaces thereof.
