Chapter 53

Who hath believed⁵² our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?⁸

For he shall grow up⁴ before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see⁴ him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire⁴ him.

He is despised¹² and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted⁷ with grief: and we hid as it were⁵⁶ [our] faces from him; he was despised,¹² and we esteemed¹ him not.

Surely he hath borne¹ our griefs, and carried¹ our sorrows: yet we did esteem¹ him stricken,⁷ smitten⁹⁴ of God, and afflicted.³⁰

But he [was] wounded²¹ for our transgressions, [he was] bruised³⁰ for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.⁸

All we like sheep have gone astray;¹ we have turned¹ every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid⁵² on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed,⁸ and he was afflicted,¹² yet he opened⁴ not his mouth: he is brought⁹³ as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers⁶ is dumb,⁸ so he openeth⁴ not his mouth.

He was taken²⁷ from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare³⁴ his generation? for he was cut off⁸ out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

And he made⁴ his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done¹ no violence, neither [was any] deceit in his mouth.

Yet it pleased¹ the LORD to bruise¹⁵ him; he hath put [him] to grief:⁵² when thou shalt make⁴ his soul an offering for sin, he shall see⁴ [his] seed, he shall prolong⁵⁵ [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper⁴ in his hand.

He shall see⁴ of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied:⁴ by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify⁵⁵ many; for he shall bear⁴ their iniquities.

Therefore will I divide¹⁷ him [a portion] with the great, and he shall divide¹⁷ the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out⁵² his soul unto death: and he was numbered⁸ with the transgressors;⁶ and he bare¹ the sin of many, and made intercession⁵⁵ for the transgressors.⁶
