Chapter 29

Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city [where] David dwelt!¹ add³ ye year to year; let them kill⁴ sacrifices.

Yet I will distress⁵² Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel.

And I will camp¹ against thee round about, and will lay siege¹ against thee with a mount, and I will raise⁵² forts against thee.

And thou shalt be brought down,¹ [and] shalt speak¹⁷ out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low¹¹ out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper⁴⁶ out of the dust.

Moreover the multitude of thy strangers⁵ shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones [shall be] as chaff that passeth away:⁶ yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

Thou shalt be visited¹¹ of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring⁶ fire.

And the multitude of all the nations that fight⁶ against Ariel, even all that fight⁶ against her and her munition, and that distress⁵⁶ her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.

It shall even be as when an hungry [man] dreameth,⁴ and, behold, he eateth;⁶ but he awaketh,⁵² and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth,⁴ and, behold, he drinketh;⁶ but he awaketh,⁵² and, behold, [he is] faint, and his soul hath appetite:⁶ so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight⁶ against mount Zion.

Stay¹¹⁷ yourselves, and wonder;³ cry ye out,¹¹⁷ and cry:³ they are drunken,¹ but not with wine; they stagger,¹ but not with strong drink.

For the LORD hath poured out¹ upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed¹⁷ your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.¹⁴

And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed,⁷ which [men] deliver⁴ to one that is learned,^{6 5612} saying,² Read³ this, I pray thee: and he saith,¹ I cannot; ^{3201 4} for it [is] sealed:⁷

And the book is delivered⁸ to him that is not learned,^{1 5612} saying,² Read³ this, I pray thee: and he saith,¹ I am not learned.^{1 5612}

Wherefore the Lord said,⁴ Forasmuch as this people draw near⁸ [me] with their mouth, and with their lips do honour¹⁴ me, but have removed their heart far¹⁴ from me, and their fear toward me is taught³⁰ by the precept of men:

Therefore, behold, I will proceed⁶ to do a marvellous work⁵³ among this people, [even] a marvellous work⁵³ and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise [men] shall perish,¹ and the understanding of their prudent¹² [men] shall be hid.¹⁰¹

Woe unto them that seek deep⁵⁶ to hide⁵³ their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say,⁴ Who seeth⁶ us? and who knoweth⁶ us?

Surely your turning of things upside down² shall be esteemed¹¹ as the potter's⁶ clay: for shall the work say⁴ of him that made⁶ it, He made¹ me not? or shall the thing framed say¹ of him that framed⁶ it, He had no understanding?⁵²

[Is] it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned¹ into a fruitful field, ³⁷⁵⁹ and the fruitful field ³⁷⁵⁹ shall be esteemed¹¹ as a forest?

And in that day shall the deaf hear¹ the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see⁴ out of obscurity, and out of darkness.

The meek also shall increase¹ [their] joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice⁴ in the Holy One of Israel.

For the terrible one is brought to nought,¹ and the scorner⁵ is consumed,¹ and all that watch⁶ for iniquity are cut off:⁸

That make a man an offender⁵⁶ for a word, and lay a snare⁴ for him that reproveth⁵⁶ in the gate, and turn aside⁵⁵ the just for a thing of nought.

Therefore thus saith¹ the LORD, who redeemed¹ Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed,⁴ neither shall his face now wax pale.⁴

But when he seeth² his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify⁵⁵ my name, and sanctify⁵² the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear⁵⁵ the God of Israel.

They also that erred⁶ in spirit shall come¹ to understanding, and they that murmured⁷ shall learn⁴ doctrine.
