Chapter 28

The wicked flee¹ when no man pursueth:⁶ but the righteous are bold⁴ as a lion.

For the transgression of a land many [are] the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding⁵⁶ [and] knowledge⁶ the state [thereof] shall be prolonged.⁵⁵

A poor⁶ man that oppresseth⁶ the poor [is like] a sweeping⁶ rain which leaveth no food.

They that forsake⁶ the law praise¹⁷ the wicked: but such as keep⁶ the law contend¹⁰¹ with them.

Evil men understand⁴ not judgment: but they that seek¹⁸ the LORD understand⁴ all [things].

Better [is] the poor⁶ that walketh⁶ in his uprightness, than [he that is] perverse [in his] ways, though he [be] rich.

Whoso keepeth⁶ the law [is] a wise⁵⁶ son: but he that is a companion⁶ of riotous⁶ [men] shameth⁵⁵ his father.

He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth⁵⁶ his substance, he shall gather¹⁷ it for him that will pity⁶ the poor.

He that turneth away⁵⁶ his ear from hearing² the law, even his prayer [shall be] abomination.

Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray⁵⁶ in an evil way, he shall fall⁴ himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good [things] in possession.⁴

The rich man [is] wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding⁵⁶ searcheth him out.⁴

When righteous [men] do rejoice,² [there is] great glory: but when the wicked rise,² a man is hidden.²⁹

He that covereth¹⁸ his sins shall not prosper:⁵⁵ but whoso confesseth⁵⁶ and forsaketh⁶ [them] shall have mercy.²⁹

Happy [is] the man that feareth¹⁸ alway: but he that hardeneth⁵⁶ his heart shall fall⁴ into mischief.

[As] a roaring⁶ lion, and a ranging⁶ bear; [so is] a wicked ruler⁶ over the poor people.

The prince that wanteth understanding [is] also a great oppressor: [but] he that hateth⁶ covetousness shall prolong⁵⁵ [his] days.

A man that doeth violence⁷ to the blood of [any] person shall flee⁴ to the pit; let no man stay⁴ him.

Whoso walketh⁶ uprightly shall be saved:¹¹ but [he that is] perverse¹² [in his] ways shall fall⁴ at once.

He that tilleth⁶ his land shall have plenty⁴ of bread: but he that followeth¹⁸ after vain [persons] shall have poverty enough.⁴

A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste⁵ to be rich⁵³ shall not be innocent.¹¹

To have respect⁵³ of persons [is] not good: for for a piece of bread [that] man will transgress.⁴

He that hasteth¹² to be rich [hath] an evil eye, and considereth⁴ not that poverty shall come⁴ upon him.

He that rebuketh⁵⁶ a man afterwards shall find⁴ more favour than he that flattereth⁵⁶ with the tongue.

Whoso robbeth⁶ his father or his mother, and saith,⁶ [It is] no transgression; the same [is] the companion of a destroyer. ^{7843 56}

He that is of a proud heart stirreth up¹⁷ strife: but he that putteth his trust⁶ in the LORD shall be made fat.²⁹

He that trusteth⁶ in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh⁶ wisely, he shall be delivered.¹¹

He that giveth⁶ unto the poor⁶ shall not lack: but he that hideth⁵⁶ his eyes shall have many a curse.

When the wicked rise,² men hide¹¹ themselves: but when they perish,² the righteous increase.⁴
