Chapter 19

Better [is] the poor⁶ that walketh⁶ in his integrity, than [he that is] perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

Also, [that] the soul [be] without knowledge, [it is] not good; and he that hasteth⁵ with [his] feet sinneth.⁶

The foolishness of man perverteth¹⁷ his way: and his heart fretteth⁴ against the LORD.

Wealth maketh⁵⁵ many friends; but the poor is separated¹¹ from his neighbour.

A false witness shall not be unpunished,¹¹ and [he that] speaketh⁵⁵ lies shall not escape.¹¹

Many will intreat¹⁷ the favour of the prince: and every man [is] a friend to him that giveth gifts.

All the brethren of the poor⁶ do hate¹ him: how much more do his friends go far¹ from him? he pursueth¹⁸ [them with] words, [yet] they [are] wanting [to him].

He that getteth⁶ wisdom loveth⁶ his own soul: he that keepeth⁶ understanding shall find² good.

A false witness shall not be unpunished,¹¹ and [he that] speaketh⁵⁵ lies shall perish.⁴

Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule² over princes.

The discretion of a man deferreth⁵² his anger; and [it is] his glory to pass² over a transgression.

The king's wrath [is] as the roaring of a lion; but his favour [is] as dew upon the grass.

A foolish son [is] the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife [are] a continual⁶ dropping.

House and riches [are] the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent⁵⁶ wife [is] from the LORD.

Slothfulness casteth⁵⁵ into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.⁴

He that keepeth⁶ the commandment keepeth⁶ his own soul; [but] he that despiseth⁶ his ways shall die.⁴

He that hath pity⁶ upon the poor lendeth⁵⁶ unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay¹⁷ him again.

Chasten¹⁶ thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare⁴ for his crying.⁵³

A man of great ¹⁶³² wrath shall suffer⁶ punishment: for if thou deliver⁵⁵ [him], yet thou must do it again.⁵⁵

Hear³ counsel, and receive¹⁶ instruction, that thou mayest be wise⁴ in thy latter end.

[There are] many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.⁴

The desire of a man [is] his kindness: and a poor⁶ man [is] better than a liar.

The fear of the LORD [tendeth] to life: and [he that hath it] shall abide⁴ satisfied; he shall not be visited¹¹ with evil.

A slothful [man] hideth¹ his hand in [his] bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.⁵⁵

Smite⁵⁵ a scorner,⁵ and the simple will beware:⁵⁵ and reprove⁵² one that hath understanding,¹² [and] he will understand⁴ knowledge.

He that wasteth¹⁸ [his] father, [and] chaseth away⁵⁵ [his] mother, [is] a son that causeth shame,⁵⁶ and bringeth reproach.⁵⁶

Cease,³ my son, to hear² the instruction [that causeth] to err² from the words of knowledge.

An ungodly witness scorneth⁵⁵ judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth¹⁷ iniquity.

Judgments are prepared⁸ for scorners,⁵ and stripes for the back of fools.
