Chapter 13

A wise son [heareth] his father's instruction: but a scorner⁵ heareth¹ not rebuke.

A man shall eat⁴ good by the fruit of [his] mouth: but the soul of the transgressors⁶ [shall eat] violence.

He that keepeth⁶ his mouth keepeth⁶ his life: [but] he that openeth wide⁶ his lips shall have destruction.

The soul of the sluggard desireth,¹⁰² and [hath] nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.²⁹

A righteous [man] hateth⁴ lying: ⁸²⁶⁷ but a wicked [man] is loathsome,⁵⁵ and cometh to shame.⁵⁵

Righteousness keepeth⁴ [him that is] upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth¹⁷ the sinner.

There is that maketh himself rich,¹⁰² yet [hath] nothing: ³⁶⁰⁵ [there is] that maketh himself poor,¹¹⁴ yet [hath] great riches.

The ransom of a man's life [are] his riches: but the poor⁶ heareth¹ not rebuke.

The light of the righteous rejoiceth:⁴ but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.⁴

Only by pride cometh⁴ contention: but with the well advised¹² [is] wisdom.

Wealth [gotten] by vanity shall be diminished:⁴ but he that gathereth⁶ by labour shall increase.⁵⁵

Hope deferred³⁰ maketh the heart sick:⁵⁶ but [when] the desire cometh,⁶ [it is] a tree of life.

Whoso despiseth⁶ the word shall be destroyed:¹¹ but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.²⁹

The law of the wise [is] a fountain of life, to depart² from the snares of death.

Good understanding giveth⁴ favour: but the way of transgressors⁶ [is] hard.

Every prudent [man] dealeth⁴ with knowledge: but a fool layeth open⁴ [his] folly.

A wicked messenger falleth⁴ into mischief: but a faithful ambassador [is] health.

Poverty and shame [shall be to] him that refuseth⁶ instruction: but he that regardeth⁶ reproof shall be honoured.²⁹

The desire accomplished⁸ is sweet⁴ to the soul: but [it is] abomination to fools to depart² from evil.

He that walketh⁶ with wise [men] shall be wise:⁴ but a companion⁶ of fools shall be destroyed.¹¹

Evil pursueth¹⁷ sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.¹⁷

A good [man] leaveth an inheritance⁵⁵ to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner⁶ [is] laid up⁷ for the just.

Much food [is in] the tillage of the poor: ^{7326 6} but there is [that is] destroyed¹² for want of judgment.

He that spareth⁶ his rod hateth⁶ his son: but he that loveth⁶ him chasteneth him betimes.¹⁴

The righteous eateth⁶ to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.⁴
