Chapter 88

A Song [or] Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician¹⁸ upon Mahalath Leannoth,¹⁵ Maschil ^{7919 56} of Heman the Ezrahite.
O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried¹ day [and] night before thee:

Let my prayer come⁴ before thee: incline⁵⁴ thine ear unto my cry;

For my soul is full¹ of troubles: and my life draweth nigh⁵² unto the grave.

I am counted⁸ with them that go down⁶ into the pit: I am as a man [that hath] no strength:

Free among the dead,⁵ like the slain that lie⁶ in the grave, whom thou rememberest¹ no more: and they are cut off⁸ from thy hand.

Thou hast laid¹ me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

Thy wrath lieth hard¹ upon me, and thou hast afflicted¹⁴ [me] with all thy waves. Selah.

Thou hast put away mine acquaintance³⁰ far⁵² from me; thou hast made¹ me an abomination unto them: [I am] shut up,⁷ and I cannot come forth.⁴

Mine eye mourneth¹ by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called¹ daily upon thee, I have stretched out¹⁴ my hands unto thee.

Wilt thou shew⁴ wonders to the dead?⁵ shall the dead arise⁴ [and] praise⁵⁵ thee? Selah.

Shall thy lovingkindness be declared²⁹ in the grave? [or] thy faithfulness in destruction?

Shall thy wonders be known¹¹ in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

But unto thee have I cried,¹⁴ O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent¹⁷ thee.

LORD, why castest thou off⁴ my soul? [why] hidest⁵⁵ thou thy face from me?

I [am] afflicted and ready to die⁶ from [my] youth up: [while] I suffer¹ thy terrors I am distracted.⁴

Thy fierce wrath goeth over¹ me; thy terrors have cut me off.⁴⁰

They came round about¹ me daily like water; they compassed⁵² me about together.

Lover⁶ and friend hast thou put far⁵² from me, [and] mine acquaintance³⁰ into darkness.
