Chapter 69

To the chief Musician¹⁸ upon Shoshannim, [A Psalm] of David.
Save⁵⁴ me, O God; for the waters are come in¹ unto [my] soul.

I sink¹ in deep mire, where [there is] no standing: I am come¹ into deep waters, where the floods overflow¹ me.

I am weary¹ of my crying:² my throat is dried:⁸ mine eyes fail¹ while I wait¹⁸ for my God.

They that hate⁶ me without a cause are more¹ than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy⁵⁶ me, [being] mine enemies⁶ wrongfully, are mighty:¹ then I restored⁵⁵ [that] which I took not away.¹

O God, thou knowest¹ my foolishness; and my sins are not hid⁸ from thee.

Let not them that wait⁶ on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed⁴ for my sake: let not those that seek¹⁸ thee be confounded¹¹ for my sake, O God of Israel.

Because for thy sake I have borne¹ reproach; shame hath covered¹⁴ my face.

I am become a stranger⁹⁴ unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me¹ up; and the reproaches of them that reproached⁶ thee are fallen¹ upon me.

When I wept,⁴ [and chastened] my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

I made⁴ sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

They that sit in⁶ the gate speak⁴ against me; and I [was] the song of the drunkards.^{6 7941}

But as for me, my prayer [is] unto thee, O LORD, [in] an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear³ me, in the truth of thy salvation.

Deliver⁵⁴ me out of the mire, and let me not sink:⁴ let me be delivered¹¹ from them that hate⁶ me, and out of the deep waters.

Let not the waterflood ⁷⁶⁴¹ overflow⁴ me, neither let the deep swallow me up,⁴ and let not the pit shut⁴ her mouth upon me.

Hear³ me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness [is] good: turn³ unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

And hide⁵⁵ not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble:¹ hear³ me speedily.

Draw nigh³ unto my soul, [and] redeem³ it: deliver³ me because of mine enemies.⁶

Thou hast known¹ my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries⁶ [are] all before thee.

Reproach hath broken¹ my heart; and I am full of heaviness:⁴ and I looked¹⁷ [for some] to take pity,² but [there was] none; and for comforters,¹⁸ but I found¹ none.

They gave⁴ me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.⁵⁵

Let their table become a snare before them: and [that which should have been] for [their] welfare, [let it become] a trap.

Let their eyes be darkened,⁴ that they see² not; and make their loins continually to shake.⁵⁴

Pour out³ thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold⁵⁵ of them.

Let their habitation be desolate;¹² [and] let none dwell⁶ in their tents.

For they persecute¹ [him] whom thou hast smitten;⁵² and they talk¹⁷ to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

Add³ iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come⁴ into thy righteousness.

Let them be blotted out¹¹ of the book of the living, and not be written¹¹ with the righteous.

But I [am] poor and sorrowful:⁶ let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.¹⁷

I will praise¹⁷ the name of God with a song, and will magnify¹⁷ him with thanksgiving.

[This] also shall please⁴ the LORD better than an ox [or] bullock that hath horns⁵⁶ and hoofs.⁵⁶

The humble shall see¹ [this, and] be glad:⁴ and your heart shall live⁴ that seek⁶ God.

For the LORD heareth⁶ the poor, and despiseth¹ not his prisoners.

Let the heaven and earth praise¹⁷ him, the seas, and every thing that moveth⁶ therein.

For God will save⁵⁵ Zion, and will build⁴ the cities of Judah: that they may dwell¹ there, and have it in possession.¹

The seed also of his servants shall inherit⁴ it: and they that love⁶ his name shall dwell⁴ therein.
