Chapter 22

To the chief Musician¹⁸ upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken¹ me? [why art thou so] far from helping me, [and from] the words of my roaring?

O my God, I cry⁴ in the daytime, but thou hearest⁴ not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

But thou [art] holy, [O thou] that inhabitest⁶ the praises of Israel.

Our fathers trusted¹ in thee: they trusted,¹ and thou didst deliver¹⁷ them.

They cried¹ unto thee, and were delivered:⁸ they trusted¹ in thee, and were not confounded.¹

But I [am] a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised⁷ of the people.

All they that see⁶ me laugh me to scorn:⁵⁵ they shoot out⁵⁵ the lip, they shake⁵⁵ the head, [saying],

He trusted² on the LORD [that] he would deliver¹⁷ him: let him deliver⁵⁵ him, seeing he delighted¹ in him.

But thou [art] he that took me out⁵ of the womb: thou didst make me hope⁵⁶ [when I was] upon my mother's breasts.

I was cast⁹⁰ upon thee from the womb: thou [art] my God from my mother's belly.

Be not far⁴ from me; for trouble [is] near; for [there is] none to help.⁶

Many bulls have compassed¹ me: strong [bulls] of Bashan have beset me round.¹⁴

They gaped¹ upon me [with] their mouths, [as] a ravening⁶ and a roaring⁶ lion.

I am poured out⁸ like water, and all my bones are out of joint:⁹⁸ my heart is like wax; it is melted⁸ in the midst of my bowels.

My strength is dried up¹ like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth⁹⁴ to my jaws; and thou hast brought⁴ me into the dust of death.

For dogs have compassed¹ me: the assembly of the wicked⁵⁶ have inclosed⁵² me: they pierced^{1 738} my hands and my feet.

I may tell¹⁷ all my bones: they look⁵⁵ [and] stare⁴ upon me.

They part¹⁷ my garments among them, and cast⁵⁵ lots upon my vesture.

But be not thou far⁴ from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste³ thee to help me.

Deliver⁵⁴ my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

Save⁵⁴ me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard¹ me from the horns of the unicorns.

I will declare¹⁷ thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise¹⁷ thee.

Ye that fear the LORD, praise¹⁶ him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify¹⁶ him; and fear³ him, all ye the seed of Israel.

For he hath not despised¹ nor abhorred¹⁴ the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid⁵² his face from him; but when he cried¹⁵ unto him, he heard.¹

My praise [shall be] of thee in the great congregation: I will pay¹⁷ my vows before them that fear him.

The meek shall eat⁴ and be satisfied:⁴ they shall praise¹⁷ the LORD that seek⁶ him: your heart shall live⁴ for ever.

All the ends of the world shall remember⁴ and turn⁴ unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship¹⁰¹ before thee.

For the kingdom [is] the LORD'S: and he [is] the governor⁶ among the nations.

All [they that be] fat upon earth shall eat¹ and worship:¹⁰¹ all they that go down⁶ to the dust shall bow⁴ before him: and none can keep alive¹⁴ his own soul.

A seed shall serve⁴ him; it shall be accounted²⁹ to the Lord for a generation.

They shall come,⁴ and shall declare⁵⁵ his righteousness unto a people that shall be born,¹² that he hath done¹ [this].
