Chapter 40

Moreover the LORD answered⁴ Job, and said,⁴

Shall he that contendeth² with the Almighty instruct [him]? he that reproveth⁵⁶ God, let him answer⁴ it.

Then Job answered⁴ the LORD, and said,⁴

Behold, I am vile;¹ what shall I answer⁵⁵ thee? I will lay¹ mine hand upon my mouth.

Once have I spoken;¹⁴ but I will not answer:⁴ yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.⁵⁵

Then answered⁴ the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,⁴

Gird up³ thy loins now like a man: I will demand⁴ of thee, and declare⁵⁴ thou unto me.

Wilt thou also disannul⁵⁵ my judgment? wilt thou condemn⁵⁵ me, that thou mayest be righteous?⁴

Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder⁵⁵ with a voice like him?

Deck³ thyself now [with] majesty and excellency; and array⁴ thyself with glory and beauty.

Cast abroad⁵⁴ the rage of thy wrath: and behold³ every one [that is] proud, and abase⁵⁴ him.

Look³ on every one [that is] proud, [and] bring him low;⁵⁴ and tread down³ the wicked in their place.

Hide³ them in the dust together; [and] bind³ their faces in secret.⁷

Then will I also confess⁵⁵ unto thee that thine own right hand can save⁵⁵ thee.

Behold now behemoth, which I made¹ with thee; he eateth⁴ grass as an ox.

Lo now, his strength [is] in his loins, and his force [is] in the navel of his belly.

He moveth⁴ his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.²⁹

His bones [are as] strong pieces of brass; his bones [are] like bars of iron.

He [is] the chief of the ways of God: he that made⁶ him can make his sword to approach⁵⁵ [unto him].

Surely the mountains bring him forth⁴ food, where all the beasts of the field play.¹⁷

He lieth⁴ under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.

The shady trees cover⁴ him [with] their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.⁴

Behold, he drinketh up⁴ a river, [and] hasteth⁴ not: he trusteth⁴ that he can draw up⁴ Jordan into his mouth.

He taketh⁴ it with his eyes: [his] nose pierceth⁴ through snares.
