Chapter 18

Then answered⁴ Bildad the Shuhite, and said,⁴

How long [will it be ere] ye make⁴ an end of words? mark,⁴ and afterwards we will speak.¹⁷

Wherefore are we counted⁸ as beasts, [and] reputed vile⁸ in your sight?

He teareth⁶ himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken¹¹ for thee? and shall the rock be removed⁴ out of his place?

Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out,⁴ and the spark of his fire shall not shine.⁴

The light shall be dark¹ in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out⁴ with him.

The steps of his strength shall be straitened,⁴ and his own counsel shall cast him down.⁵⁵

For he is cast²⁷ into a net by his own feet, and he walketh¹⁰¹ upon a snare.

The gin shall take⁴ [him] by the heel, [and] the robber shall prevail⁵⁵ against him.

The snare [is] laid⁷ for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

Terrors shall make him afraid¹⁴ on every side, and shall drive⁵² him to his feet.

His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction [shall be] ready¹² at his side.

It shall devour⁴ the strength of his skin: [even] the firstborn of death shall devour⁴ his strength.

His confidence shall be rooted out¹¹ of his tabernacle, and it shall bring⁵⁵ him to the king of terrors.

It shall dwell⁴ in his tabernacle, because [it is] none of his: brimstone shall be scattered²⁹ upon his habitation.

His roots shall be dried up⁴ beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off.⁴

His remembrance shall perish¹ from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

He shall be driven⁴ from light into darkness, and chased⁵⁵ out of the world.

He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

They that come after [him] shall be astonied⁸ at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.^{1 8178}

Surely such [are] the dwellings of the wicked, and this [is] the place [of him that] knoweth¹ not God.
