Chapter 4

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered⁴ and said,⁴

[If] we assay¹⁴ to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved?⁴ but who can⁴ withhold² himself from speaking?

Behold, thou hast instructed¹⁴ many, and thou hast strengthened¹⁷ the weak hands.

Thy words have upholden⁵⁵ him that was falling,⁶ and thou hast strengthened¹⁷ the feeble⁶ knees.

But now it is come⁴ upon thee, and thou faintest;⁴ it toucheth⁴ thee, and thou art troubled.¹¹

[Is] not [this] thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

Remember,³ I pray thee, who [ever] perished,¹ being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?⁸

Even as I have seen,¹ they that plow⁶ iniquity, and sow⁶ wickedness, reap⁴ the same.

By the blast of God they perish,⁴ and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.⁴

The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.⁸

The old lion perisheth⁶ for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.¹⁰¹

Now a thing was secretly brought²⁹ to me, and mine ear received⁴ a little thereof.

In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth² on men,

Fear came¹ upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.⁵²

Then a spirit passed⁴ before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:¹⁷

It stood still,⁴ but I could not discern⁵⁵ the form thereof: an image [was] before mine eyes, [there was] silence, and I heard⁴ a voice, [saying],

Shall mortal man be more just⁴ than God? shall a man be more pure⁴ than his maker?⁶

Behold, he put no trust⁵⁵ in his servants; and his angels he charged⁴ with folly:

How much less [in] them that dwell⁶ in houses of clay, whose foundation [is] in the dust, [which] are crushed¹⁷ before the moth?

They are destroyed⁹³ from morning to evening: they perish⁴ for ever without any regarding⁵⁶ [it].

Doth not their excellency [which is] in them go away?⁸ they die,⁴ even without wisdom.
