Chapter 17

And Elijah the Tishbite, [who was] of the inhabitants of Gilead, said⁴ unto Ahab, [As] the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand,¹ there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,²

Get³ thee hence, and turn¹ thee eastward, and hide⁸ thyself by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.

And it shall be, [that] thou shalt drink⁴ of the brook; and I have commanded¹⁴ the ravens to feed⁴⁴ thee there.

So he went⁴ and did⁴ according unto the word of the LORD: for he went⁴ and dwelt⁴ by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.

And the ravens brought⁵⁶ him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank⁴ of the brook.

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up,⁴ because there had been no rain in the land.

And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,²

Arise,³ get³ thee to Zarephath, which [belongeth] to Zidon, and dwell¹ there: behold, I have commanded¹⁴ a widow woman there to sustain⁴⁴ thee.

So he arose⁴ and went⁴ to Zarephath. And when he came⁴ to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman [was] there gathering²⁶ of sticks: and he called⁴ to her, and said,⁴ Fetch³ me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.⁴

And as she was going⁴ to fetch² [it], he called⁴ to her, and said,⁴ Bring³ me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

And she said,⁴ [As] the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful ³⁷⁰⁹ of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I [am] gathering²⁶ two sticks, that I may go in¹ and dress¹ it for me and my son, that we may eat¹ it, and die.¹

And Elijah said⁴ unto her, Fear⁴ not; go³ [and] do³ as thou hast said: but make³ me thereof a little cake first, and bring⁵² [it] unto me, and after make⁴ for thee and for thy son.

For thus saith¹ the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste,⁴ neither shall the cruse of oil fail,⁴ until the day [that] the LORD sendeth² rain upon the earth.

And she went⁴ and did⁴ according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat⁴ [many] days.

[And] the barrel of meal wasted¹ not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake¹⁴ by Elijah.

And it came to pass after these things, [that] the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick;¹ and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left⁸ in him.

And she said⁴ unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come¹ unto me to call my sin to remembrance,⁵³ and to slay⁵³ my son?

And he said⁴ unto her, Give³ me thy son. And he took⁴ him out of her bosom, and carried him up⁵⁵ into a loft, where he abode,⁶ and laid⁵⁵ him upon his own bed.

And he cried⁴ unto the LORD, and said,⁴ O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil⁵² upon the widow with whom I sojourn,¹¹⁴ by slaying⁵³ her son?

And he stretched¹¹³ himself upon the child three times, and cried⁴ unto the LORD, and said,⁴ O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.⁴

And the LORD heard⁴ the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again,⁴ and he revived.⁴

And Elijah took⁴ the child, and brought him down⁵⁵ out of the chamber into the house, and delivered⁴ him unto his mother: and Elijah said,⁴ See,³ thy son liveth.

And the woman said⁴ to Elijah, Now by this I know¹ that thou [art] a man of God, [and] that the word of the LORD in thy mouth [is] truth.
