Chapter 25

If there be a controversy between men, and they come⁸ unto judgment, that [the judges] may judge¹ them; then they shall justify⁵² the righteous, and condemn⁵² the wicked.

And it shall be, if the wicked man [be] worthy to be beaten,⁵³ that the judge⁶ shall cause him to lie down,⁵² and to be beaten⁵² before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.

Forty stripes⁵⁵ he may give him, [and] not exceed:⁵⁵ lest, [if] he should exceed,⁵⁵ and beat⁵³ him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile⁸ unto thee.

Thou shalt not muzzle⁴ the ox when he treadeth out² [the corn].

If brethren dwell⁴ together, and one of them die,¹ and have no child, the wife of the dead⁵ shall not marry without unto a stranger: ^{2114 5} her husband's brother shall go in⁴ unto her, and take¹ her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother¹⁷ unto her.

And it shall be, [that] the firstborn which she beareth⁴ shall succeed⁴ in the name of his brother [which is] dead,⁵ that his name be not put out¹¹ of Israel.

And if the man like⁴ not to take² his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up¹ to the gate unto the elders, and say,¹ My husband's brother refuseth¹⁴ to raise up⁵³ unto his brother a name in Israel, he will¹ not perform the duty of my husband's brother.¹⁵

Then the elders of his city shall call¹ him, and speak¹⁴ unto him: and [if] he stand¹ [to it], and say,¹ I like¹ not to take² her;

Then shall his brother's wife come⁸ unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose¹ his shoe from off his foot, and spit¹ in his face, and shall answer¹ and say,¹ So shall it be done¹¹ unto that man that will not build up⁴ his brother's house.

And his name shall be called⁸ in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.⁷

When men strive¹¹ together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near¹ for to deliver⁵³ her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth⁵⁶ him, and putteth forth¹ her hand, and taketh⁵² him by the secrets:

Then thou shalt cut off¹ her hand, thine eye shall not pity⁴ [her].

Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, ⁶⁸ a great and a small.

Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, ³⁷⁴ a great and a small.

[But] thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened⁵⁵ in the land which the LORD thy God giveth⁶ thee.

For all that do⁶ such things, [and] all that do⁶ unrighteously, [are] an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

Remember² what Amalek did¹ unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth² out of Egypt;

How he met¹ thee by the way, and smote the hindmost¹⁷ of thee, [even] all [that were] feeble¹² behind thee, when thou [wast] faint and weary; and he feared not God.

Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest⁵³ from all thine enemies⁶ round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth⁶ thee [for] an inheritance to possess² it, [that] thou shalt blot out⁴ the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget⁴ [it].
