Chapter 17

And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed⁴ from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched⁴ in Rephidim: and [there was] no water for the people to drink.²

Wherefore the people did chide⁴ with Moses, and said,⁴ Give³ us water that we may drink.⁴ And Moses said⁴ unto them, Why chide⁴ ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt¹⁷ the LORD?

And the people thirsted⁴ there for water; and the people murmured⁵⁵ against Moses, and said,⁴ Wherefore [is] this [that] thou hast brought us up⁵² out of Egypt, to kill⁵³ us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

And Moses cried⁴ unto the LORD, saying,² What shall I do⁴ unto this people? they be almost ready to stone¹ me.

And the LORD said⁴ unto Moses, Go on³ before the people, and take³ with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest⁵² the river, take³ in thine hand, and go.¹

Behold, I will stand⁶ before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite⁵² the rock, and there shall come water out¹ of it, that the people may drink.¹ And Moses did⁴ so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

And he called⁴ the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted¹⁵ the LORD, saying,² Is the LORD among us, or not?

Then came⁴ Amalek, and fought¹¹ with Israel in Rephidim.

And Moses said⁴ unto Joshua, Choose³ us out men, and go out,³ fight¹⁰ with Amalek: to morrow I will stand¹² on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

So Joshua did⁴ as Moses had said¹ to him, and fought⁹ with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up¹ to the top of the hill.

And it came to pass, when Moses held up⁵⁵ his hand, that Israel prevailed:¹ and when he let down⁵⁵ his hand, Amalek prevailed.¹

But Moses' hands [were] heavy; and they took⁴ a stone, and put⁴ [it] under him, and he sat⁴ thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up¹ his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down² of the sun.

And Joshua discomfited⁴ Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

And the LORD said⁴ unto Moses, Write³ this [for] a memorial in a book, and rehearse³ [it] in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly² put out⁴ the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

And Moses built⁴ an altar, and called⁴ the name of it Jehovahnissi: ^{5251 3071}

For he said,⁴ Because the LORD hath sworn ³⁶⁷⁶ [that] the LORD [will have] war with Amalek from generation to generation.
