John MacArthur's Lessons

Abortion The Biblical View of Abortion
Altar Calls Altar Calls, Invitations, and Manipulation that occur in our evangelical churches today. Some very frank and needed insights.
America [01] What's Wrong with America
America [02] Can God Bless America?  -  "Americans are to one degree or another in a state of fear. They're afraid. And they're crying out to heaven for an invisible means of support against an invisible enemy by an invisible God. And they hope that God is not only omnipresent, not only omniscient, not only omnipotent, but even more importantly that He's interested. The cry "God Bless America" seems to be getting louder and louder every day and commanding more and more emotion. And as I was listening to this, it struck me as an interesting issue. The prayer is simple, "God, bless America. Keep us protected. Keep us long-term safe. Keep us free. Keep us prosperous." And I began to think about the fact that if God were to bless America as everybody seems to want Him to do, it might look very different than we would expect. Will God bless America? Can God bless America? Should God bless America? And if God did bless America, what would He be saying about His holiness? If God did bless America, what would He be saying about our morality? About our spiritual condition? Could God bless America and protect His reputation as holy God?"

Baptism [01] Baptism: A Matter of Obedience - "It’s amazing how many people who proclaim Christ and confess Christ, have never been properly baptized. Now, probably the greatest number of people who call themselves Christians have never been baptized, according to New Testament baptism. It may well be that the majority of those who call themselves Christians have not been properly baptized. It’s not as if it’s not clear about what baptism is and how it is to be done—it is clear. It’s just that there has been a sort of an indifference to that very, very important matter. I would like to, if I can, put an end to that indifference this morning, if that, in fact, is the case."--John MacArthur
Baptism [02] Is Baptism Necessary for Salvation?
Baptism [03] A Scriptural Critique of Infant Baptism - "There is a widespread belief in the Church that babies are to be baptized. And so, soon after their birth, they are taken to the church whether it’s a Roman Catholic church, or whether it’s a Presbyterian church, or whether it’s a Reformed church, or a Lutheran church, an Anglican church, an Episcopalian church…They are taken to the church and they are sprinkled with water on the head—a little bit of water is dripped on their head and that constitutes their "Christian" baptism. This is very widespread. This is all over the world, in fact. Now, the result of this is that you have baptized non-Christians all over the world."--John MacArthur

Bible [06] Why I am Committed to Teaching the Bible - Even though I've dealt with theological questions and doctrinal controversies in some of my books, I have never done so from the perspective of a systematic theologian. It is of little concern to me whether some point of doctrine fits with this tradition or that. I want to know what is biblical. All my concerns are biblical, and my desire is to be biblical in all my teaching.

Simple Steps to Solid Study - John MacArthur provides five straightforward steps to help you study God’s Word.

Blessing Can God Bless America?
By-Laws Grace Community Church By-Laws - Discusses Church Membership, Elders, Councils, Committees, Officers, Ordination, Pastor-Teacher, Disputes, Funds, and other issues.
Catholics [01) Roman Catholic Mary Worship - This is an excerpt from a sermon John preached on the Virgin Birth of Christ.  This portion deals with the false teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, with regards to the cultic worship of Mary.  A very bold declaration of truth.
Catholics [02) Irreconcilable Differences: Catholics and Evangelicals.
Catholics [03) The Scandal of the Catholic Priesthood - "I am so used to getting up and saying "take out your Bible," but that wouldn't help, since the Catholic priesthood isn't found anywhere in scripture, so we can't start there. I want to talk about the scandal of the priesthood, because obviously we are all made very much aware of the tremendous tragedy that is playing out before us in the immorality of the Catholic priesthood. And what I would like to do is to give some historical perspective to that, some sense of the bigger picture of what's going on in the priesthood. And in order to do that, I have to talk a little bit about the scandal of the priesthood itself. So it's a bit of a play on words. It's a bit of a pun, if you will, when I talk about the scandal of the priesthood.

I'm not just talking about the current scandal. I'm talking about the whole scandal of the priesthood itself, as the hierarchical structure of the Roman Catholic church. Let me give you a little bit of background.

Catholics [04) Is Roman Catholicism Biblical? - "In today’s spirit of ecumenism, many evangelicals have called for the Protestant Church to lay aside its differences with Rome and pursue unity with the Catholic Church. Is that possible? Is Roman Catholicism simply another facet of the body of Christ that should be brought into union with its Protestant counterpart? Is Roman Catholicism simply another Christian denomination?

Children [01) "Shade for Our Children" - "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." [Ephesians 6:4]
Children [02) "A Crash Course in Christian Parenting" - "Books, treatises, volumes—have been written on parenting. God has reduced it to one statement: 'Do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.' This is God’s pattern for parenting. This is not the message of secular psychology, this is not the message of conventional wisdom, this is not the message of political correctness, this is the Word of God. It doesn’t sound anything like modern psychology. It doesn’t sound like the things that we have been told about childhood education, about how to raise a child. It doesn’t sound anything like what the world is currently saying and it shouldn’t because it is divine."--John MacArthur
Children [03) Your Child's Greatest Need - If you've been a parent for any time at all, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that your child came into the world with an insatiable faculty for evil. Even before birth, your baby's little heart was already programmed for sin and selfishness. The inclination toward depravity is such that, given free reign, every baby has the potential to become a monster. So how should the doctrines of original sin and total depravity impact your parenting? Before I answer that, let me show you three parenting approaches that miss the mark.

Christian Issues [01) John MacArthur shares the Issues of his heart. He discusses those subjects that really trouble him in the Church: [1] - How to find the right Church, [2] - The Baker PTL Scandal, [3] - The Word of God in the Church, [4] - The Gospel message we preach, [5] - Visions, [6] - Leadership in the Church, [7] - Lordship Salvation
Christian Issues [02) Making Decisions on Nonmoral Issues. How do we deal with issues of life that are not moral in and of themselves? Such issues as food, drink, recreation, television, movies, books, magazines, sports, Sunday activities, cards, games, smoking, hair styles, clothing styles, music styles, etc.
Christian Issues [03] What to Do in the Gray Areas - Seven simple principles from that will shed light on your decision-making.
Christian Life [01] How Do You Live "Under the Influence"? - Paul is making a contrast, not a comparison, between wine and the Holy Spirit. Wine controls a person completely and works evil in his heart and life. The Holy Spirit also controls completely, but He empowers you unto true righteousness. The Spirit’s influence provides divine fuel for a different, free, uninhibited life lived for God’s glory.
Christian Life [02] How to Get in the Game - Your first obligation as a Christian is to learn about your position in the Body of Christ. You've got to study the chalkboard, so to speak, and see where you stand; see who's on either side of you, who's behind you, who's in front of you. Unfortunately, many Christians don't know how to live, partly because they don't know their position. I want to draw your position on the spiritual chalkboard so you can be an effective player in the game.
Christian Life [03] A Good Soldier - John MacArthur discusses the marks and the chief ambition of a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
Christianity Deadly Trends of Popular Christianity - The pop church is everywhere. It is perhaps most evident on religious television, where the diet of celebrity variety shows and other forms of entertainment has decreased the taste for worship. It is quickly gaining a foothold in Christian radio, where phone-in talk shows and live psychotherapy are replacing Bible teaching as the staple. It has ravaged local churches, turning them into little more than social clubs and community centers where the focus is on the individual's felt needs, not on the church's function as the Body of Christ in the world.

If you're discontent, worried, anxious, bewildered, perplexed, confused, agitated, or otherwise in need of comfort, the reason is that you don't trust Him like you should. If you really trust Christ, what do you have to worry about? The reason the disciples were so stirred up is that they had begun to focus on their problems and they didn't seem to be able to put their trust in Christ. So in these verses He reminds them of the importance of trusting Him."--John MacArthur

Confession

If We Confess Our Sins - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness – 1 John 1:9. That is one of the first verses many new Christians memorize–and rightly so. It holds forth the comforting promise of forgiveness and cleansing for all of us who have struggled with guilt in this sin-stained world. Yet there are some today who, because they fail to comprehend the extent of divine forgiveness, deny the clear teaching of 1 John 1:9 and teach other to do the same. They say that to pray for forgiveness reveals unbelief. After all, a healthy Christian doesn't experience guilt because he understands Christ's total forgiveness. Why seek forgiveness when you already have it?

Conscience

Winning the War from the Inside Out - "Self-examination is of course a critical and vital part of our spiritual life and development. Being honest with our selves and honest before God, calls for that self-examination. And that’s why the Bible says "let a man examine him self" and then partake of the table.  In this matter of self-examination we have to get in touch with our conscience. And I want to address that issue this morning.

Corinthians 2 Corinthians - Second Corinthians is the most personally revealing of all Paul's epistles. At the same time, it is perhaps the least familiar of all his inspired writings, often overlooked both by individual believers and preachers alike. The neglect of this magnificent epistle is an immense loss to the church, however, for it has much to offer. No one in ministry should be ignorant of the riches of these insights. A church should not ordain anyone who has not read this epistle and commentaries on this treatise.
Counseling [01] Christian Counseling. Some dangers to be aware of when looking back to repressed memories.
Counseling [02] Rediscovering Biblical Counseling - "Ironically, while the secular world has grown increasingly disaffected with the professional psychotherapy industry, the evangelical world has been frantically trying to marry secular psychology and biblical truth. While the world becomes more and more suspicious of psychology, Christians seem to be growing more and more committed to it. Perhaps it is fair to say that many in the church are addicted to psychotherapy. The rush to embrace psychology within the church is frankly mystifying. Psychology and Christianity have been enemies from the beginning."
Counseling [03] Doing What No Man Can Do - I think it's no exaggeration to say that the Christian counseling scene today is in total shambles. I'm not talking about true Christian counseling–that which trusts the Bible and the power of the Holy Spirit to conform a person to Christ–that kind of counseling has been successfully changing sinners since the apostolic age. I'm talking about pseudo-counseling–the attempt to fix people with a blend of secular psychological theory and the Bible. But have integrationist counselors affected any real change among evangelical Christians? Are people really fixed?
Creation [01] John MacArthur on Creationism: When did the universe and all that is in it come into being? How did it happen and how long did it take? God, who is the only One who existed before the world began, gives His answers to those questions in His revelation to man, the Bible.

Cross [01] Looking at the Cross from God's Perspective - "I want us to look at the cross in its relationship to God, to God Himself, God the Father. What did it mean to God? What did the death of Christ mean to God? How did it represent God? How did it glorify God? What is His perspective on that great event?"
Cross [02] The Murder of Jesus - John MacArthur explains how the greatest injustice of all time is at the foundation of the sinner's redemption.
Cross [03] Who's to Blame? - Jesus did not fall victim to anyone or anything. He had come for the specific purpose of dying to atone for sin (Luke 19:10; John 1:29). His crucifixion was a vivid display of His authority over circumstances, people, and even death. Far from being a tragic end to His earthly ministry, it was the culmination of all He had set out to do.
Cross [04] God's Commentary on The Passion of Christ - Well, the world certainly has been awakened to The Passion of The Christ, hasn’t it? This film that has dominated the public discourse for the last number of months has exposed millions of people to the account of the suffering, death and even the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s really a remarkable phenomenon to see so many newscasters and media pundits and politicians and entertainers and just about everybody else with the name of Jesus on their lips all the time. It’s amazing.  And I thought this morning, just to help you, I would do a commentary on the cross. But I’m just going to repeat a commentary for you that is given by someone else. The most powerful commentary ever given on the cross came from God and I want you to open your Bible to Matthew chapter 27 and I’m going to show you God’s commentary on the cross, and He gave it at the very time it happened.
Death [01] Memorial Service for Irene MacArthur (John MacArthur's Mother) -- "My purpose in this moment is to speak to you from the Word of God. My goal is not to try to eulogize my mother-that would be to proverbially 'gild the lily.' Dad said earlier in the week, 'What’s to say? Everybody who knows her, understands.' But, my purpose is to look at her biography not from a human side-we could spend a lot of time doing that…we’ve been doing that, as you can imagine, over the many hours, and will continue to do that. But, my purpose is not to look at her biography from the human side, but to look at her biography from the divine side. While it is true that her life was unique, humanly speaking-spiritually speaking, her life followed a path identical to every other Christian."--John MacArthur
Death [02] A Funeral Message -- "These are always such times of mixed emotion when we lose someone so precious as Don (Last name omitted).  This is a wonderful testimony to his life to see such a congregation here on a Sunday afternoon; believe me. And all of us who knew him could do nothing but love him because of the character of the man and the warmth of his personality. And I have learned through the years to put a high grade on faithfulness, and his was "A plus" in terms of faithfulness. And right on down to the last that he could do would be to serve at Grace To You in the wonderful way that he did. And we're so greatly indebted to really all the family who have meant so much to this church and to me personally through these many years. And, of course, we all feel the loss."--John MacArthur

Discipline [02]

Learning Self-Discipline - Self-discipline is important in any endeavor of life. It's best defined as the ability to regulate one’s conduct by principle and sound judgment, rather than by impulse, desire, or social custom. Biblically, self-discipline may be summarized in one word: obedience. To exercise self-discipline is to avoid evil by staying within the bounds of God’s law.

Doctrine [01] John MacArthur, the Pastor of Grace Community Church, presents their complete Statement of Doctrine--What they Believe.
Doctrine [02] Independent Fundamental Churches of America (I. F. C. A.) Meeting - John MacArthur is brought before the I. F. C. A. to explain and defend his views on: The Blood of Jesus Christ, Dispensationalism, and the Gospel.  Because John is teaching the whole counsel of God, in a bold and courageous manner, he has obviously upset Satan and the demons, therefore he is daily met with numerous attacks on his doctrine and teachings, by various writers and speakers.  The I. F. C. A. simply asked John to come and explain the many criticisms leveled at him and his teachings.  This is a very insightful look at John MacArthur.

Election [01] Who Chose Whom? - "What a privilege and honor it is to address you from the Word of God on such a marvelous theme as the doctrine of election.  Churches today are struggling through a severe identity crisis. Many churches, many church leaders and pastors are trying to figure out what style to follow, what mode to follow. Trendy new options compete with ancient ones. They capture the commitment of churches, and leaders, and believers. And there is in the midst of this is a sad and, I think, needless confusion with regard to the character of the church, usually based on some notion that somehow culture creates the church, culture informs ministry, style produces spirituality, things like that. As we think about settling the matter of the churches identity, I really believe we have to go back to the heart of that identity which is bound up in the eternal decree of God with regard to the church, namely the doctrine of election."-- John MacArthur

Evangelism [02] Personal Evangelism 101 - Jesus would have failed personal evangelism class in almost every Bible college and seminary I know. Matthew 19:16-22 describes a young man who looked like the hottest evangelistic prospect the Lord had encountered so far. He was ripe. He was eager. There was no way he would get away without receiving eternal life. But he did. Instead of getting him to make a decision, in a sense Jesus chased him off. He failed to draw the net. He failed to sign the young man up. Should we allow our ideas of evangelism to indict Jesus? I think we need to allow His example to critique contemporary evangelism. Christ's confrontation of this young man gives us much-needed insight into reaching the lost.
Evangelism [03] God Glorified in the Nobodies - Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men – fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots – and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. MacArthur draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original twelve disciples for today's modern disciple - you.
Evangelism [04] How to Confront the Culture - Preaching today is clearly out of season (2 Tim. 4:2) and evangelism is difficult, but that's nothing new. Paul faced worse challenges in his day. He faced an increasingly anti-Christian culture—there was no spirit of tolerance to shield believers from hostility. Still, he preached the gospel of Jesus Christ–a hard, uncompromising message of repentance. That is best illustrated in Acts 17:16-34 where Paul faced one of the most intellectually erudite and morally corrupt audiences ever–the philosophers on Mars Hill.

Faith [02] Faith According to the Apostle James - "The release of The Gospel According to Jesus sparked a more spirited discussion than either I or my publisher anticipated. The book's central premise is that the gospel summons sinners to yield to Christ's authority. I was aware, of course, of those who decry that teaching as "lordship salvation." They propound the notion that any demand for surrender in the gospel invitation amounts to salvation by works. Realizing that the book would confront these sensitive and controversial issues, I was nevertheless unprepared for the mass of letters I have received from thousands of readers. A few have written to challenge the book's conclusions, dispute this or that assertion, question my exegesis, argue the theological fine points, object to my terminology, or even voice doubts about my orthodoxy. I have carefully read every such letter, weighing the criticisms and attempting to understand what those who disagree are saying. A common thread manifests itself plainly in nearly every area of dispute: our differences all seem related to our conflicting perceptions of what Scripture means when it speaks of faith."--John MacArthur

Faith [04]

Jesus' Perspective on Sola Fide - "Many who have embraced "the New Perspective on Paul" are also proposing a different slant on the doctrine of justification by faith. When the text of Scripture is interpreted in the new light, they say, Pauline support for the principle of sola fide [faith alone], the doctrine of imputation, and the distinction between law and gospel doesn't seem quite so strong.  We say that's nonsense. We reject the historical and hermeneutical revisionism of the New Perspective, but regardless of how one interprets the apostle Paul, it is quite clear that Jesus taught justification by faith alone. To abandon this truth is to abandon biblical soteriology altogether.  No doctrine is more important to evangelical theology than the doctrine of justification by faith alone—the Reformation principle of sola fide. Martin Luther rightly said that the church stands or falls on this one doctrine.
False Doctrine

Spurgeon and the Down-Grade Controversy - In March 1887, Charles Spurgeon published the first of two articles entitled "The Down Grade" in his monthly magazine, The Sword and the Trowel. The articles were published anonymously, but the author was Robert Shindler, Spurgeon's close friend and fellow Baptist pastor. Shindler wrote the articles with input from Spurgeon, who footnoted the first article with a personal endorsement: "Earnest attention is requested for this paper. We are going down hill at breakneck speed."

Tracing the state of evangelicalism from the Puritan age to his own era, Shindler noted that every revival of true evangelical faith had been followed within a generation or two by a drift away from sound doctrine, ultimately leading to wholesale apostasy. He likened this drifting from truth to a downhill slope, and thus labeled it "the down-grade."--John MacArthur

CNN LARRY KING LIVE  Debate Over Anti-Gay Marriage Constitutional Amendment Aired February 24, 2004 - 9 pm  ET

Tonight, the president comes out hard against same-sex marriage, and emotions are rising as the debate heats us. With us tonight, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom. He brought this issue center stage earlier this month when he ordered the city and county to issue same-sex marriage licenses; nationally syndicated Christian broadcaster Pastor John MacArthur of California's Grace Community Church; Chad Allen, the actor and producer who starred in TV hits like "My Two Dads" and "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman," became an activist after he was ousted by tabloids in 1996; and Representative Marilyn Musgrave, Republican of Colorado. The White House says the president approves of the broad principles in the federal marriage amendment. That's an amendment she introduced in the House.

Integrity Got Backbone? - No one would argue that we live in a world of compromise. In fact, compromise is often touted as a virtue; it's diplomatic and reasonable. On the other hand, those who hold fast their integrity are viewed as difficult, hard-nosed, and unconcerned about the common good. You can understand how the world thinks that way, but shouldn't Christians be different? Unfortunately, too many believers worry about what people will think, say, or do if they take a stand on godly principles. So instead, they compromise their convictions or maintain them under the cover of darkness. If you're one of those faint-hearted Christians, or if you know people who are, I'd like to encourage you to take a lesson from the life of one man, a man with a backbone.

Masons

FREEMASONRY AND THE CHRISTIAN - "Recently the largest Protestant denomination has ruled that membership in the Lodge is up to one's individual conscience. This position is contrary to a traditional Christian view of Freemasonry. Freemasonry is a fraternal order that advocates development of virtue and character among its members, as the authors can attest through their own past membership in it. The soteriology of Freemasonry is strongly antibiblical, as several of its teachings indicate--teachings associated with the Lambskin Apron, how to prepare for heaven, the Perfect Ashlar, the Common Gavel, and how to live a worthwhile life. Christian membership in the Lodge is, therefore, impossible to justify in light of Scriptural teachings."--Eddy D. Field II and Eddy D. Is your attitude that of George Whitefield, who prayed, "O Lord, give me souls or take my soul"? Do you, like Henry Martyn, mourn when you see others trapped in false religion and cry out, "I cannot endure existence if Jesus is to be so dishonored"?

Preaching [01] Inerrancy and Preaching: Where Exposition and Exegesis come Together - "The theological highlight of the past decade has without question been evangelicalism's intense focus on biblical inerrancy. Yet it seems our commitment to inerrancy is somewhat lacking in the way it fleshes out in practical ministry. Specifically, evangelical preaching ought to reflect our conviction that God's Word is infallible and inerrant."--John MacArthur

Preaching [04] Fifteen Evil Consequences of Plexiglas Preaching - Armed with a “big business” mentality, many in the seeker-sensitive movement have replaced Bible-based sermons with anecdote-filled talks. After all, that’s the stuff that sells. In light of this growing evangelical trend, John MacArthur examines what happens when preachers put the seeker before the Savior and abandon God’s Word for ear-tickling entertainment.
Psychology The Psychology Epidemic and Its Cure - "The church's right to counsel from the Bible has been reconfirmed in court rulings of recent times. Yet in many instances the church has surrendered that right and responsibility because of the 'professionalization' of the counseling ministry among Christians. This is tragic because the behavioral sciences are not, as is commonly believed, scientific. Neither have they proven effective in changing the human heart. 'Christian psychology,' with its claim of a secret knowledge about dealing with people, has made deep inroads into the church, but it is no more than a duplication of its secular counterpart with Scripture references occasionally interspersed. A reliance on Christ, the 'Wonderful Counselor,' and God's sufficient Word as dispensed by spiritually gifted Christians to one another is the church's only solution in meeting the spiritual needs of its people."--John MacArthur

Purity [02]

Purity: Sincerely Living - Talking about holiness; talking about purity of life is of course absolutely critical. It is the desire of the Lord that we be conformed to the image of His Son. It is the Word of Scripture that, “If you say you abide in Christ, you ought to walk the way He walked,” and of course He walked without sin. That is, of course, the whole point of sanctification, and dealing with this is really critical, particularly in your youth.  If you are going to win that battle—I am going to tell you today where you are going to have to win it. I am going to get right down to the “nitty-gritty” of where the battle has to be won.

Rapture

Is Christ's Return Imminent?  - The NT is consistent in its anticipation that the return of Christ might occur at any moment. That pervading perspective of imminence prompts three questions. The first question pertains to whether the Tribulation will precede Christ’s coming for the church. The answer to that question is that it will not because the church is never asked to look forward to the tribulation, but they are asked to look forward to Christ’s coming. The second question revolves around how the return of Christ could have been imminent in the early church. The answer here is that no one but the Father knows when the coming will occur, so that Christians including the early church must always be ready. The third question asks why Christ’s imminent return is so important. This answer relates to the motivation it supplies for believers to purify their lives and thereby progress toward the goal of sanctification and Christlikeness. The threefold call of the imminence doctrine is to wake up and obey right now, to throw off the works of darkness, and to put on the garments of holy living.

I want us to look at several realities that are proven by the resurrection, several that are made incontrovertible and inarguable by the resurrection. Sabbath [01] The New Testament and the Mosaic Sabbath -

In the Church of Jesus Christ there has long been discussion about the Sabbath, or Seventh Day. Questions relating to the weekly day of rest come up again and again. The basic issue can be summed up like this,
1. Are Christians obligated to keep the Sabbath—the Sabbath of Old Testament Judaism?
2. Are Christians obligated to turn Sunday into a kind of a Sabbath with similar restrictions?
3. Are Christians to reject all Sabbath Law and enjoy freedom from that Sabbath Law and leave any other designated day alone, as to prescribing any specific restrictions?
.

Sabbath [02] The Lord's Day--Does It Matter?

Sunday, as we call it, has always been and is today, among Christians worldwide, the day of worship, and that poses the question, “Why”? Is it arbitrary? Is it traditional? Who started it? How did it get started? How are we to conduct ourselves on this day?

Well, many churches today want to give people as much of Sunday as they possibly can for them to do what they want, so they have reduced Sunday worship to a one-hour, sort of non-intrusive experience that you can have on your way to the beach, or to the ball game. It’s extremely casual; it’s sort of a “drop-by” deal that doesn’t intrude--you sort of “slot” it in between “brunch” and “beach”. And, as I said, there are many churches that offer a Saturday night service, because it is too dark to play anyway, and that leaves Sunday completely free for games and recreation and the mall. Does that matter? Well, I want to show you that I think it does

Sabbath [03] Are Christians under the law of the Sabbath? Is Sunday the Christian Sabbath? Can you wash your car or cut your grass on Sunday without sinning? Includes two articles, I have also included all the verses that reference the Sabbath.
Sabbath [04] The Sabbath of Moses - Are we still under Sabbath law? Are we still under some seventh day obligation? Is the first day of the week now our Sabbath, and should it have all of the compunctions and all of the prescriptions of the Old Testament Sabbath? Or should it not? Well, we have to understand the Mosaic law and the New Covenant to answer those questions, and let's begin with the Mosaic law. So we now turn now from the seventh day of creation to the seventh day Sabbath of Mosaic law.
Sabbath [05] The Sabbath Question: The Nature of the Old Covenant - Now, when you come to the New Testament, the question is: Is the Sabbath law still in place? And that's where we are now.

So many people in the Church today are convinced that they have true saving faith and yet do not meet the requirements of Christianity. Salvation [05] Running the Race - What does your knowledge of Christ have to do with running a race? John MacArthur shows you how effort relates to reward.
Salvation [06] Saved? From What? - When the Father gave the incarnate Son a name, He proclaimed His rescue mission in no uncertain terms. Jesus, the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew name Joshua, means "Savior." Now, "there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved" [Acts 4:12]. Jesus is the Savior–that's been the joyful news from the start. But you might ask the question: "A Savior to save us from what?" That's certainly a fair question. The word savior implies that we need to be saved from something. Saved is a synonym for rescued or delivered. It implies there's some kind of threatening condition, a dangerous, desperate, or deadly condition from which we need to be rescued. The question is, from what?

Scandals What in the World Has Happened to the Church?  The scandal that has rocked media religion in recent weeks brings as great a reproach on Christianity as anything in the history of the church. A friend who just returned from a trip to Asia told me that even in Japan and Hong Kong the story of rampant sexual and fiscal misconduct in one of Christianity's best-known television ministries is front-page news.

Security [02] Perseverance of the Saints -  Peter's life exemplifies what the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints means in the life of a faltering believer. Christ's present intercessory prayers assure that genuine believers will be saved to the uttermost. This is the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. Those with true faith will not lead perfect lives, though some have attributed such a claim to proponents of working-faith salvation. The teaching of "once saved, always saved" may carry the false implication that after "accepting Christ" a person may live any kind of life and still be saved. That leaves out the doctrine of perseverance, which carries with it the need for a holy life. Peter in his first epistle furnishes six means through which God causes every Christian to persevere: by regenerating them to a living hope, by keeping them through His power, by strengthening them through tests of faith, by preserving them for ultimate glory, by motivating them with love for the Savior, and by saving them through a working faith. Quantification of how much failure the doctrine of perseverance allows is impossible, but Jesus did prescribe a way for the church to deal with a professing believer whose life sin had seemingly come to dominate.

Sin [04] Mortification of Sin - "It is puzzling how a Christian who has experienced liberation from sin's dominion can at times give in to temptation in his daily life. They should not try to co-exist with it, but should remove it completely. Christians obey God's command to mortify sin by living a life in the Spirit and not acknowledging any obligation to the flesh. Covering up sin, internalizing it, exchanging it for another sin, or merely repressing it do not equate to sin's mortification. Continuously and uncompromisingly removing sin--resulting in a conscience free from guilt--is what the process entails."-- John MacArthur

Table Talks

Special Series: "Table Talks with Jesus"  Without question, some of the most poignant, powerful teaching in all of Jesus' earthly ministry took place on the last evening he spent with His disciples before He was crucified. The occasion was the Passover meal, and it has come to be known as the Last Supper. Table Talks With Jesus is a series examining Jesus' teaching on those awesome hours the night He was betrayed. My prayer in offering this series is that those who know Jesus Christ will grow in their understanding of the riches that are ours because of His love for us, and that those who do not know Him will be convicted of their need to surrender completely to Him as Lord and Savior.

Temptation [01] Triumphing over Temptation - "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." [1 Corinthians 10:13]
Temptation [02] Whose Fault is Our Temptation - "When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." [James 1:13-17]
Thanksgiving Rekindling the Gratitude -  The Thanksgiving season is a wonderful time to heighten your sensitivity to the blessings bestowed by God. Thanksgiving grabs your attention, shakes the cobwebs loose, and reminds you of all God's most precious gifts. That's one reason Thanksgiving has always held such a special place in my heart. It rekindles in me the kind of God-centered gratitude that our Lord demands and deserves—the kind that should readily be on our lips year round.
Tithing Thoughts on Tithing -  "Tithing," are you familiar with the concept of tithing, you know, "Give 10% to the church," you know, that kind of thing? Tithing, basically, is never, ever advocated in the New Testament; it is never taught in the New Testament—never!
Tolerance Why Biblical Christianity is Intolerable in an Age of "Tolerance" - In this post-modern era, one virtue is esteemed above all others: tolerance. As a matter of fact, tolerance may soon be the only virtue secular society will embrace. Many traditional virtues [including humility, self-control, and chastity] have already fallen out of public favor and in some quarters are openly scorned or even regarded as transgressions.
