SHAWM, SHALM (Fr. chalumeau, chalemelle, hautbois; Ger. Schalmei, Schalmey; Ital. Pifar cenamelle; Lat. calamus; tibia; Gr. a- Ws) , the medieval forerunner of the oboe, the treble members of the large family of reed instruments
