PETOSKEY , a city and the county-seat of Emmet county. Michigan, U.S.A., on Little Traverse Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of
Bear
  Creek, in the north-west
part
  of the lower peninsula. Pop. (189o), 2872; (1900), 5285, of whom 856 were foreign-born; (1904), 5186; (1910), 4778. It is served by the Pere Marquette and the Grand Rapids & Indiana rail-ways and by steamboat lines to Chicago,
Detroit
 ,
Buffalo
  and other lake ports.
Bear
  Creek furnishes considerable water-power, and among the manufactures are lumber,
paper
 , leather and foundry and
machine
 -shop products. Petoskey was settled about 1874, was incorporated as a
village
  in 1879, was chartered as a city in 1895, and in 1902 replaced Harbor Springs as county-seat. It was named after an Ojibwa Indian
chief
 .
