MONOPOLI , a seaport town and episcopal see of Apulia, Italy, in the province of Bari, from which it is 25 M. S.E. by rail, 3o ft. above sea-level. Pop. (1901), 22,616. The medieval

Oapr6s, corruptible, from Oetpew, destroy.walls are preserved and the castle dates from 1552. The harbour is small, the principal trade being in agricultural products. Close to it are rock -hewn tombs, possibly belonging to the ancient Gnathia (q.v.).
