ALIPUR , a suburb of Calcutta, containing Belvedere House , the official residence of the lieutenant -governor of Bengal, and a number of handsome mansions. It lies within the limits of the south suburban municipality, and is a cantonment of native troops. On the Calcutta maidan, opposite Alipur Bridge , stood two trees under which duels were fought.
