Joe is a man who usually attends church. He gets there on time when he can and sits toward the
middle. However, today was a rainy day and Joe was late. His car wouldn't start and when it did
he had to drive slowly. By the time he got to church, he didn't see any empty seats.
An usher walked up to Joe and said, "There's a chair in the front row, right on the end. Do you
want to sit in it?"
Joe replied, "No thanks, I'll just stand in the back." As Joe stood in the back, he looked at that
chair. He longed to sit in it. He thought to himself, "Why didn't I accept the offer to sit in the
chair....my legs are getting tired!"
Joe had intellectual faith in the chair. He believed it would hold him up. He knew it would serve
a good purpose and relax his muscles. However, he didn't have volitional faith.
The Devil has his kind of faith and he trembles. The Devil believes in Jesus intellectually, but not
volitionally. He knows God has power over him, but he will not submit to Him and worship Him
as Lord and Savior.
The chair could have been holding Joe up and doing it's job the whole time. However, Joe would
not act on what he believed. Many people are this way. They have an intellectual knowledge of
Christ, but not a volitional knowledge. They have been called "intellectually convinced
unbelievers."
Faith is intellectual and volitional.
Volitional: an act of making a choice or decision; also : a choice or decision made
