There was once a candymaker in Indiana who wanted to make a candy that would be a
witness. He took a stick of hard white candy. White to represent the pure Virgin birth and hard to
represent the solid rock of ages that our Lord is. He took the candy and shaped it into a "J" to
represent the holy name of Jesus. It could also show the staff that the Good Shepherd uses to
lead us. Thinking the candy somewhat plain, the candymaker put a large red stripe to represent
the blood that our Lord shed on the cross, and three smaller stripes to show the beating and
scourging he received when he gave his life as an offering.
Unfortunately, the candy became known as the candy cane, a totally meaningless decoration
seen during the holiday season. It is my prayer it can still be used as a witness not only now, but
through the entire year. A witness of the Great Love our Lord gave us, which remains the
Ultimate force in our world today.
