In this chapter, God seeks Adam and Eve. He says, "Where are you?". This is typical of what God has done throughout time. Humans don’t even know their need for a God and His perfect plan, so He comes looking for them.
This question is obviously a rhetorical question. God is omni-present and knows were everything is - at all times. However, this question could be seen as a spiritual one. "Where is your heart?" may be a more appropriate question for Adam and Eve.
Even though Adam and Eve sinned against God, He was loving to them. Before He made them leave the Garden of Eden, He gave them a prophetic promise. Eve’s Seed was to bruise the serpent’s seed’s head. This was referring to Jesus Christ and was fulfilled when He rose from the dead. We will see a dual fulfillment of this prophecy in His Millennium reign.
Interestingly, when Adam and Eve sinned, they found themselves naked and made fig leaves to cover their bodies. God did not like their coverings, therefore He gave them coverings of animal skins. There is much symbolism in this. Humans cannot please God with their own merits. Although they may do what they see is right, it will not please God unless He is obeyed and glorified. Lastly, a foreshadowing of the animal sacrifices, which provided temporary atonement, and eventually, Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, which provided eternal forgiveness, are symbolized with this animal covering.
