The Jezreel Valley

The Jezreel Valley is town and valley in northern Israel where Ahab had his palace and Naboth his vineyard; the wounded Joram came to Jezreel; Jezebel died here. Here are some Biblical references.

1 Samuel 29:1 "Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel."

1 Kings 18:45-46 "And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel."

2 Kings 8:29 "And king Joram went back to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick."

The Jezreel Valley means "God sows" and refers to a major valley, a northern city, a southern city, and the son of Hosea.

The Old Testament uses the name to refer to the entire valley of Jezreel which separates Galilee from Samaria, including the valley of Esdraelon. The valley was important militarily as a battle site for Deborah (Judges 4-5), Gideon (Judges 6-7), Saul (2 Samuel 4), Jehu (2 Kings 9-10), and Josiah (2 Kings 22). The geography of Palestine fashioned Jezreel into a major route for travel from north to south and from east to west.

The northern city of Jezreel, which guarded the corridor to Beth-shan, was the site of the royal residence of Omri and Ahab where the incident of Naboth's vineyard occurred (1 Kings 21).

David's wife Ahinoam was from the southern city of Jezreel which is located in the vicinity of Ziph (1 Samuel 25:43-44 "David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel, and so both of them were his wives. But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.").

The prophet Hosea called his son Jezreel as a symbol to show the evil nature of the dynasty of Jehu which began with much fighting in Jezreel. The name also symbolized that God will sow seeds of prosperity after the annihilation (Hosea 1:4, 5 "Then the LORD said to him: "Call his name Jezreel, For in a little while I will avenge the bloodshed of Jezreel on the house of Jehu, And bring an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. It shall come to pass in that day That I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel." Here are some more references to Jezreel in the Old Testament. 2 Kings 9:30 reads, "Now when Jehu had come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she put paint on her eyes and adorned her head, and looked through a window." Jezreel is listed in the genealogies in 1 Chronicles 4:3. "These were the sons of the father of Etam: Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash; and the name of their sister was Hazelelponi;" 2 Chronicles 22:6 reads, "Then he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which he had received at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Azariah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick." The last references is in Hosea 2:22. "The earth shall answer With grain, With new wine, And with oil; They shall answer Jezreel."

Jezreel is mentioned many times in the Old Testament, by name. However, it is not penned in the New Testament.
