The Billy Graham Mission came to San Diego, California from May 8th through May 11th. During this time, thousands of people came forward to repent and trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. You can read about the San Diego mission at http://www.missionsd.com.
I was privileged to attend two of the events. Here are some pictures from Qualcomm Stadium. When you see them, please pray for the people who came forward and got saved. Pray they find a great, local church and grow spiritually.
The Mission drew about 270,000 attendees over four days, and thousands of people made decisions for Christ each day. The youth event on Saturday night drew 74,000 people, making it the largest single event in Qualcomm Stadium history.
Another record was broken on Saturday morning, when Kidz Mix drew 40,000 attendees, making it the largest kids' event attendance in the 413-mission history of Mr. Graham's ministry. Nearly 3,000 people came forward to dedicate themselves to Christ at that meeting.
"The greatest spiritual event in San Diego history." --Pastor David Jeremiah
Perhaps one of the most astonishing facts about Mission San Diego was the massive cooperation of church and community leaders. The first leadership meeting for the Mission was held in December, and in just 145 days a total of 25,000 people came forward to serve as volunteers. Many of the volunteers came from San Diego County, where 85 percent of the population is unchurched. Mission chairman Rolf Benirschke thanked the volunteers for giving their time -- which totaled 900,000 hours -- and called them "the team that has helped to change San Diego forever."
The $2.3 million budget for Mission San Diego was met during the offering Friday night. As a result, no offering was taken at Saturday's youth night. In the words of San Diego pastor and author David Jeremiah, the Saturday event "was our gift to the youth in our community." An offering taken on Sunday night will cover expenses related to television broadcasts of the Mission, in addition to local evangelistic initiatives in San Diego. The San Diego executive committee also plans to donate part of the offering to help the next Billy Graham Mission, to be held in Oklahoma City in June.
On Sunday morning, pastors at churches throughout San Diego County were talking about the impact the Mission had on the city, both present and future. "The blood of Jesus was all over that stadium last night," said Ricky Andrade, music pastor at Horizon Park Chapel, one of some 700 churches -- representing 66 denominations -- that participated in the Mission.
The event ended Sunday night with Mr. Graham saying, "I will probably never preach another sermon in San Diego, but I'll see you in heaven."
And only in heaven will anybody really know how God used this event to change the eternal destiny of thousands.
